Which tourist attractions are found at Tsavo West National Park?

Tsavo West National Park which is located in the Coastal province of Kenya is more mountainous and wetter than its counterpart, with swamps, Lake Jipe and the Mzima Springs. It is known for bird life and for its large mammal’s e.g. black rhino, Cape buffalo, elephant, leopard, hippo and Masai lion. There are also other smaller animals that can be spotted in the park, such as the bush baby, hartebeest, lesser kudu and Masai giraffe.

Prepare to be captivated by its breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and unique attractions that make Tsavo West a must-visit destination for any safari lover. This park can be accessed through Mtito Gate, Man Eaters Gate, Chyulu Gate and one other near Maktau. Some of the reasons that sets this park apart from the rest include;

Lake Jipe

This lake (pronounced ji-pay) lies at the extreme southwestern end of the park and is reached by a desperately dusty track from near Taveta. Huge herds of elephants come to the lake to drink, and it’s particularly good for wildlife near the end of the dry season. Conversely, large flocks of migratory birds stop here from February to May.

Shetani Lava Flows

When entering Tsavo West through Chyulu gate, one of the first things you see in the park is Shetani lava flow. Shetani means ‘devil’ in Kiswahili. When the locals first saw ‘fire’ erupting and ‘flowing’ on the ground some 500 years ago, they believed that it was the devil himself emerging from the earth. The Shetani black lava flow is 8 km long, 1.6 km wide and 5 meters deep.

Venture into the surreal landscape of the Shetani Lava Flows, a testament to the park’s volcanic past. Marvel at the massive expanse of solidified lava that stretches as far as the eye can see, creating a captivating contrast against the surrounding vegetation. Take a guided walk along the marked trails, learning about the geological significance and legends behind these ancient lava formations. Don’t forget your camera, as the rugged beauty of the lava flows offers countless opportunities for stunning photographs.

Chyulu Hills

Rising majestically on the horizon, the Chyulu Hills form a dramatic backdrop to Tsavo West National Park. Lace up your hiking boots and embark on an adventure through this pristine mountain range. Trek along scenic trails that wind through dense forests, open grasslands, and vibrant wildflower meadows. Breathe in the fresh mountain air as you witness panoramic vistas, spotting wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, and antelopes along the way. The Chyulu Hills offer a true escape into nature, where tranquility and breathtaking beauty reign supreme.

Mzima Springs

Mzima Springs comes from the underground streams flowing from the nearby Chyulu Hills. Mzima in Swahili means ‘Life’. Witness the crystal-clear waters gushing from underground, forming a series of pools that are home to a diverse array of aquatic life.

Take a leisurely stroll along the nature trails and watch in awe as hippos, crocodiles, and various bird species go about their daily activities. Don’t miss the opportunity to view the underwater world through the specially constructed observation chamber, offering a unique glimpse into the aquatic ecosystem.

Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary

Make a visit to the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, a testament to Kenya’s commitment to wildlife conservation. This protected area is home to a significant population of black rhinos, offering a rare opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures up close.

Join a guided safari drive through the sanctuary, led by knowledgeable rangers who share insights about the rhinos’ behavior, conservation efforts, and the importance of preserving these endangered species. The Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary is a shining example of successful conservation initiatives and a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.
