6 Days Ethiopia Historic Route

Overview

This Ethiopian adventure begins and concludes in Addis Ababa. Our first is to Lalibela, the world-heritage-listed town by UNESCO, Continue to Gondar you will visit the ancient churches and castles, remnants of a bygone Ethiopian Empire. Proceed to the Simien Mountains National Park. 

Itinerary

Addis Ababa 

Located in the highlands fringing the Great Rift Valley, Addis Ababa serves as the political, cultural and commercial centre of Ethiopia. This sprawling city rests in the foothills of the Entoto Mountains and features a mix of traditional homes, elegant villas, and tall office buildings. Visitors can look forward to a selection of wonderful activities including: visiting the National Museum, displaying local art, traditional crafts and prehistoric fossils; exploring the copper-domed Holy Trinity Cathedral, a Neo-Baroque architectural landmark; and sampling rich Ethiopian coffee as well as the memorable cuisine featuring spicy stews and Ethiopia’s signature Injera bread. 

Day Itinerary 

Arrive Bole international airport at 19:40, Meet and greet our  representative at the car parking area and transfer you to the hotel. The guide will give you introduction for the next day’s trip to Lalibela, Gonder and Simien mountain. Overnight stay in Golden tulip hotel.

Lalibela 

Situated in northern Ethiopia, the town of Lalibela is named after King Lalibela of the Zagwe Dynasty. The town is considered Ethiopia’s cultural capital and one of Ethiopia’s holiest cities, it serves as a centre of pilgrimage. The undeniable highlight of this ancient capital is dubbed the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’  and includes eleven rock-hewn churches dating back to the 13th century. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is carved out of solid rock and includes subterranean monoliths, a network of interconnected tunnels, and chambers featuring magnificent frescoes. Lalibela also plays host to some of the most famous church festivals in Ethiopia. 

Day Itinerary 

Morning flight to Lalibela, the world heritage city. After an hour flight, you will arrive at Shimshaha (Lalibela Airport), transfer to hotel and start to visit the 1st group churches which are included Bieta Medhanialem (Chapel of Holy Savior) which is the biggest and Bieta Mariam (Chapel of Mary): three aisled with mural paintings and a covered pillar containing inscriptions about the end of the world according to the gadl (act )of saintly king. Further visit of Bieta Denagel (Chapel of the Virgins), Bieta Meskel (Chapel of the cross) and finally, the “double – church” of Debre Sina and Bieta Golghotha (women are not allowed in the latter since it’s where the remains of King Lalibela are and also because it contains the tabernacle of the Holy Trinity). Visit St. George Church which is the final work of Lalibela and the best design. Overnight at Mezena Lodge.

Situated in Lalibela, the Mezena Lodge provides easy access to historical sites in the town. The guestrooms include showers, bed nets, satellite TV, a separate dressing and working table, and a hairdryer. Guests can dine at the on-site restaurant which offers all-day dining, unwind with drinks in the bar, take a leisurely walk or jog in the large private area surrounding the hotel.

Day Itinerary 

In Lalibela you will have an excursion to Asheten Mariam church situated at a very hill top, to see the town of Lalibela and the surrounding attraction. P.M Visit of the second group of rock-hewn churches that are namely: Bieta Gabriel and Raphael, Bieta Merquorios, Bieta Emmanuel with unprecedented Axumite style and the Bieta Abaa Libanos (said to have been built by King Lalibela’s consort Meskal Kebra and visit the Bieta Ghiorghis which is the cruciform chapel of St. George. Overnight at  Mezena Lodge.

Day Itinerary 

Depart to Gonder at noon. We drive to Semien Mountain to visit the marvelous scenery of the Semien Mountain, the endemic animals of Walya Ibex, Chilada Baboon and birds. 5 kms from Gonder you will see the old village of the black Jewish. Simien mountain is the place to see troops of Gelada Baboon on the way. They are very attractive and so taking picture of them is unforgettable. These are a different primate found only in Ethiopia and live on vegetables and soft roots. Walk to the wonderful viewpoints around Sankaber. Walk to Jimbar Waterfalls Overnight  at Limalimo lodge.

Situated in Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains National Park, Limalimo Lodge offers rustic accommodation with views of the wooded hillsides. Guests have an option of twin, double, triple and family rooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. The grounds feature large acacia trees with hammocks and inviting benches to enjoy the serenity of nature. The lodge also offers a variety of activities such as overnight treks through the mountains with knowledgeable guides, birdwatching, and visits to Lamalimo village where guests can experience aspects of daily life in a rural Ethiopian village

Gondar 

Situated southwest of the Simien Mountains, north of Lake Tana, Gondar once served as the royal capital of the ancient Ethiopian Empire. Known as the ‘Camelot of Africa’, Gondar is home to the World Heritage Site of Fasil Ghebbi, a fortress-city previously inhabited by to the Ethiopian emperor Fasilides. Visitors can enjoy a wide selection of wonderful activities including: discovering the ancient Gondar Castle, a medieval castle and palace complex, exploring the 17th century Church of Debre Sina, featuring biblical murals on every wall and visiting the nearby Simien Mountains National Park. Don’t miss a visit to Ras Dashen, the highest mountain in Ethiopia. 

Day Itinerary 

Morning enjoy the Simian mountain and afternoon drive to Gonder. Short visit to the Royal Castles & the Bath of Emperor Fasiledes (the bath is filled with water for the important Timkat (epiphany) ceremony once a year. You will continue your visit to Debre Birhan Selassie Church (Trinity at the Mount of Light). At 18:00 transfer to airport for the air transfer back to Addis. Overnight  at Golden Tulip.

Day Itinerary 

Morning have Addis Ababa city tour including a drive to Mount Entoto for the panoramic view of the city and to visit the old palace of Menilik. Then descend back to the city and visit national museum which is the resting place of our famous ancestor LUCY. A drive to Merkato which is said to be the biggest open-air market in Africa. Have some souvenir shopping and rest. At 20:00 check out from the hotel, transfer to airport and it will be end of the trip.
