Situated on the equator west of Nanyuki, between the foothills of the Aberdares and Mount Kenya. The Conservancy boasts the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, and in 2013 reached a population milestone of 100 black rhino. Masai Mara National Reserve
One of Kenya’s undisputed natural highlights is the Masai Mara National Reserve, which sprawls across more than 1500 square kilometres of the country’s southwest. The park protects a phenomenal array of game, including charismatic species such as elephant, lion, leopard and buffalo, as well as crocodile and hippopotamus in the Mara River. The birdlife is no less impressive, with over 450 resident bird species. However, the true highlight here is the Great Migration, recognised as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. To survive the dry months of July to September, some 1.7 million wildebeest, migrate from the parched plains of the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. Along with much smaller numbers of antelope buffalo and zebra, they move to the more forgiving grasslands of the Masai Mara. In their wake come predators such as lion, hyena and cheetah, for whom these giant herds are an easy source of prey.
Day Itinerary
After Breakfast at the camp you will proceed to Lake Naivasha for a wildlife viewing boat ride in the lake for about an hour to Crescent Island Game Sanctuary.
Crescent Island Game Sanctuary is located on Lake Naivasha, in the Great Rift Valley, Kenya. It is one of the most beautiful parks in Kenya and is Naivasha’s best-kept secret. Surrounded by water, it is actually a peninsula and is accessible by boat from East or West as well as by road. It’s the best place to spend the morning, afternoon, or bring a picnic and spend the whole day with the beautiful birds and graceful animals. The shores host abundant birdlife including pelicans, cormorants, and fish-eagles with their haunting cry. There are more animals per acre than any other Kenyan Park, hence many film companies have been to the Island to film the herds of Wildebeest, Waterbuck, Zebra, and Gazelle. The Island is not fenced to allow the wildlife on the mainland to come in as they lose their habitat to development and the ever-increasing population. Hippo graze all over at night then sleep under the acacia or rest in the water by day. The giraffe who was born on the Island return to give birth; sometimes you see three generations at a time. Hyena come to hunt at night but are not resident on the island. The many python, who do live here, can be seen occasionally with a kill. Groups of Buffalo come and go but they are always monitored. From the top of the hill, there is a 360-degree view across the Lake from Longonot to Hell’s Gate to the Mau Escarpment to Eburu and onto the Aberdares. Walking along the ridge in the golden hour before sunset whilst watching the animals grazing with the water shimmering beyond, is what Africa is all about.
After an amazing morning at the Crescent Island Game Sanctuary you will proceed to the Camp for lunch and depart Naivasha for the world-famous Masai Mara Game Reserve via the Great Rift Valley. En-route enjoy the beautiful scenery. Arrive at your lodge in time for dinner and overnight.
