The Lodge

Perched on the edge of a river valley, the architecture of Sasaab blends Swahili and Moroccan design principals in which the African heat is of primary consideration. Each of the nine canvas-sided rooms is over 100m² with private plunge pools and breath-taking views across the Laikipia Plateau toward the jagged peaks of Mount Kenya. Its position above the river naturally facilitates watching the herds of elephant that come to bathe below as well as a host of other wildlife.

If you are seeking a serene oasis in the heart of the Samburu land, then Sasaab is the Africa safari camp for you. A peaceful atmosphere and soothing panoramas permeate the lodge, giving a real sense of having escaped to the wilderness.

Stepping through Sasaab’s main entrance, a beautiful wooden Swahili archway, guests will find themselves in an expansive open plan lounge, bar and dining area set around a central sunken courtyard. Open on all sides to let in a breeze and make the most of the scenery, it’s a delightful space in which to relax, have a drink and enjoy the delicious cuisine on offer. Take a book and recline on one of our swinging day beds or visit our boutique gift shop tucked next to the bar.

Safaris in Samburu

Nothing beats the excitement of a safari in Samburu, as there is so much to see and do in this exciting landscape. Sasaab is a place where opportunities for adventure in the wilderness abound. From thrilling games drives to see species unique to the area, to authentic cultural experiences and adrenalin filled fun, there’s something for everyone. Enjoy cook-out bush breakfasts in Samburu National Reserve and encounter the majestic herds of elephants for which Samburu is renowned. Learn about the myriad of birdlife on a nature walk with your guide and take in the incredible scenery from the top of ‘sundowner rock’, a magical place where you can watch the sun sink low and contemplate your safari sightings of the day.

Whether you fly into Sasaab’s airstrip or drive in by vehicle, listen out for the tinkling of bells as you make you way to the lodge and you might glimpse a caravan of camels on the move through the bush. It is not uncommon to encounter Samburu herdsmen shepherding their livestock through the bush in Westgate Conservancy. This is just one of many fascinating insights into this unique culture that a safari in Samburu provides.

Accommodation

Sasaab has nine luxury safari tents perched high above the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, each offering a serene escape in the heart of the Samburu wilderness. Each room was designed to maximise the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape as well as offer a cooling retreat from the African heat. As such, the spaces are enormous and the entire front of each tent can open up to let in a breeze. Every room has a delightful private veranda with a plunge pool and sun loungers, perfect for gazing out at the majestic views and passing wildlife below.

The design of each of our luxury safari tents is best described as a fusion of Moroccan and Swahili styles. The canvas walls with mosquito netting doors and windows mean most of sides can be opened up if you wish, allowing for uninhibited views and a cooling breeze. It is worth noting that our rooms are a little more commanding than the word ‘tent’ might suggest, with high thatched roofs and cool polished concrete floors. Four poster beds, enormous bathrooms and private plunge pools make for a completely invigorating experience and the ultimate luxury safari accommodation in Kenya. Sasaab also has a main swimming pool, built on the hillside overlooking the river.

We recommend that families book the family suite, tents 8 and 9, which have a shared central area and can be taken as an exclusive villa with separate access. Extra beds can be added to this and some of the other tents, subject to availability and with prior arrangement when booking.
